Scope of works

Paddington Station was the first to be awarded as part of the £14.8bn Crossrail programme. The station is a key interchange with the existing Network Rail services at Paddington mainline station and with the London Underground. As part of these works, Macmillan House was redeveloped to form the new entrance to the Crossrail Station.

Kilnbridge were appointed by Costain Skanska JV to manufacture and install 150 tonnes of structural steel in a Grade I listed building. The steel require a decorative N17 paint finish to match the existing structure.

The design scope included blast load analysis and temporary works. As part of the works, Kilnbridge installed temporary steelwork to maintain structural integrity whilst the existing roof was removed and a temporary structure to prevent water ingress was installed. Kilnbridge also supplied and installed new roof and plant support structures.

Challenges / Achievements 

  • Design and methodology were heavily influenced by the Grade I listed heritage environment and received timely approval from English Heritage
