The project involved the construction of a new 12-car platform on the east end of the existing station and major structural alterations to platforms 5 and 6 and the concourse building above to allow the installation of new elevators and lift shafts. VolkerFitzpatrick appointed Kilnbridge to undertake major civil engineering and structural works packages as part of their main contract works worth over £50m.

Kilnbridge designed and installed major jacking systems to the concourse building to allow the cutting and removal of existing support members and construction of new columns and beams to facilitate the realignment and construction of the new track. The structural work package included the design, fabrication and installation of the new steel hub structure and platform canopies, which provide an over-track link between the new platform and the concourse and ticketing hall whilst maintaining a fully operational concourse and platform areas.

This complex initial phase of works was followed by the erection of a new circulation building on the new platform, complete with new link bridge, canopies, platform barriers and end gates. All elements were provided with a range of Network Rail-compliant finishes, including N1, N4, N9 and N17.
