Camden Bridge Strengthening

Location: Camden, London
Value: £1.0m
Main Contractor: J Murphy & Sons
Client: Network Rail
Sector: Rail

Scope of works

Kilnbridge undertook works during Christmas of 2020 to strengthen Camden Bridge superstructure in accordance with Form AA/BA. Strengthening works required elements able to provide a deck capable of supporting RA10 at 20mph, thus allowing for Heavy Axle Weight permissions for the structure.

The Kilnbridge scope included:

  • Temporary works jacking scheme
  • Lead paint removal (CLAW regulations) surface preparation
  • Industrial paint application N1/ M24
  • Removal of existing rivets (rivet busting)
  • Hour by hour programming
  • Possession planning 24hr shifts
  • New GRP walkway
  • Bridge strengthening to sides of bridge

Challenges / Achievements

  • Kilnbridge were heavily involved in the planning stage to reduce the amount of propping required, developing a jacking scheme that consequently saved time and money for J Murphy and Network Rail
  • The strengthening works were completed on time, on budget and without any incidents
  • J Murphy & Sons and Network Rail considered the project a success, leading to Kilnbridge being appointed again in December 2021 to deliver the next phase of the works
