Main Contractor: Hochtief
Client: Network Rail
Sector: Rail

Scope of works

Kilnbridge were appointed as a specialist subcontractor by Hochtief to carry out demolition works to enable the construction of new lift shafts at Manor Park station. This formed part of the LOCROS scheme introducing step free access at the station.

Kilnbridge were primarily responsible for the removal of the main walkway over the 4 platforms and the platform buildings as well as the demolition of two staircase structures. The work was carried out over six continuous possession weekends and involved detailed planning during the week to execute the weekend works with maximum efficiency.

The demolition works were completed by cutting the structure into three 60t sections and lifting them out onto the road adjacent to the railway line. This method was chosen over traditional demolition sequences due to the structure’s close proximity to fragile overhead lines. Kilnbridge fabricated a bespoke lifting frame capable of lifting cut structures and installed extensive temporary works to stabilise the structure before it was lifted. Once lifted, the structure was demolished using remote robotic machines and removed off site for recycling.

All of these works were carried out in a highly populated area, meaning extra measures were taken to minimise noise levels and adhere to the required safety standards.
