Project Overview
Kilnbridge delivered a comprehensive structural and architectural package for the construction of Beaulieu Park Station, a key transport hub within the wider regeneration of the Beaulieu Park development in Chelmsford. The project included the fabrication and erection of the primary and secondary steelwork forming the station building and the accessible footbridge, creating the core structural framework of the facility. Supporting these works, Kilnbridge’s in-house Design and Engineering team undertook extensive design coordination and technical development to ensure the build could be delivered efficiently and safely within the constraints of a railway environment.
The platform package involved the construction of reinforced concrete platform slabs, installation of associated services, tactile paving and platform finishes, together with the fabrication and installation of platform canopies. Alongside the rail infrastructure works, Kilnbridge delivered a wide range of architectural elements, including zinc standing seam roofing, curtain walling and glazing systems, steel framing systems, cladding and roof build-ups across the station accommodation, retail units, platform buildings and plant rooms. Additional masonry works, including brickwork and blockwork to service areas, completed a package that combined structural engineering with high-quality architectural finishes.
A significant challenge throughout the project was delivering major construction activities alongside an operational railway. Critical works were undertaken during planned rail possessions, requiring meticulous planning, detailed sequencing and close collaboration with all stakeholders. Limited access windows meant activities had to be carefully coordinated to maximise productivity while maintaining strict safety and operational requirements.
The project also demanded the management of numerous specialist subcontractors delivering distinct work packages across the station. Coordinating the interfaces between steelwork, glazing, cladding, roofing and platform construction required strong programme control and proactive communication to ensure each element progressed in line with the overall construction schedule.
Beaulieu Park Station demonstrates Kilnbridge’s ability to deliver complex, multidisciplinary infrastructure projects from design through to construction. By combining engineering expertise with careful project planning, the team successfully delivered an integrated package of structural, platform and architectural works that met the requirements of both the client and the wider development programme. The effective coordination of rail possession activities enabled key milestones to be achieved while maintaining safe railway operations and minimising disruption to the surrounding network.
The completed station provides a modern, accessible gateway to one of Essex’s largest housing developments and will play a vital role in supporting future growth, improving connectivity and enhancing the passenger experience for the communities it serves.
