The Elizabeth Tower is the most recognizable feature of the Palace of Westminster. The £89m restoration and modernisation package was awarded to Sir Robert McAlpine Special Projects Division; the five-year programme was the largest repair and conservation programme in the building’s history.
Kilnbridge was appointed by Sir Robert McAlpine (SRM) to undertake a variety of passive fire protection works to upgrade the compartmentation at Elizabeth Tower. The project aimed to enhance the fire safety measures within the historic structure, ensuring it meets modern safety standards while preserving its architectural integrity.
Operating within the Palace of Westminster involved distinctive security challenges. Kilnbridge had to meticulously plan for every person or material movement, turning routine activity into significant undertakings.
The works carried out included:
- Penetration Sealing Systems.
- Linear Gap Sealing Systems.
- Fire Rated Boarding.
- Intumescent Painting.
The project successfully upgraded the fire protection systems within Elizabeth Tower. Kilnbridge’s expertise in passive fire protection and their collaborative approach with SRM and other stakeholders was crucial in achieving the project’s objectives.
