Scope of works
Kilnbridge were appointed as Main Contractor by London City Airport to construct new terminal facilities as part of the City Airport Development Programme.
The scope included:
- Construction of two new energy centres
- Extension to the main terminal both to the east and west including associated airside and landside works with complex marine piling and stitch connections
- Construction of the 500m long New East Pier to accommodate an additional eight new plane stands
- Extensive demolition works including existing control tower, baggage structures and Global Infrastructure Facility
- Strip out, de-cladding and roof removal
- Design development to RIBA Stage 5
Challenges / Achievements
- Works were carried out in a detailed sequential manner to ensure continual, uninterrupted operation of the live airport
- Significant value engineering to the design resulting in an improved product, elimination of safety risks, reduced programme duration and cost savings
