Thameslink Programme

Location: Croydon, London
Value: £450,000
Main Contractor: Carillion Rail
Client: Network Rail
Sector: Infrastructure

Scope of works

Carillion were appointed to construct three new 12-car electrified sidings to Network Rail’s Depot in Selhurst. This scheme involved designing and constructing 4 canopies to provide protection from the elements for drivers and to carry all the required services such as the lighting, water and sand delivery systems.

Kilnbridge were commissioned to develop a complete design that would fulfil the requirements of both Network Rail and British standards and also accommodate the live and variable loads of the sand delivery systems.

Kilnbridge were engaged at the Grip 4 design stage. This provided an opportunity to work closely with the client’s engineers to develop and detail a modular design, which allowed the majority of the assembly to take place at ground level.

A bespoke lifting apparatus was used to lift large sections of the canopy into place while maintaining structural rigidity. This method of erection and strict programming of short line blockades allowed the works to be undertaken with no risk to the adjacent operational rail.

Challenges / Achievements

  • Collaborative working with all stakeholders to develop a methodology for delivering works adjacent to operational rail
  • Early involvement allowed Kilnbridge develop a safer methodology for carrying out the works
