Scope of works

This project was part of Network Rail’s £150m redevelopment of Gatwick Airport station to create a safer and more convenient interchange between the station platforms and Gatwick International Airport.

Kilnbridge’s scope entailed the construction of a new 12-car platform on the east side of the existing station and major structural alterations to platforms 5 and 6 and the concourse building above to allow the installation of new elevators and lift shafts, including:​

  • Design and installation of major jacking systems on temporary steelwork towers to the concourse building​
  • Cutting and removal of existing support members and construction of new columns and beams​
  • Realignment and construction of new track​
  • Erection of a new circulation building on the new platform complete with link bridge, canopies, platform barriers and end gates​
  • Provision of a range of Network Rail compliant finishes including N1, N4, N9 and N17

Challenges / Achievements 

  • Works completed whilst maintaining a fully operational concourse and platform areas.
  • Compliance with ALO working regulations (which became mandatory midway through the works) whilst maintaining quality, programme and budget
